Why do Amazonian people have some Australasian DNA?

People in South America share a complicated connection to groups in South Asia and Oceania? Do they share ancestry from a mysterious group geneticists call Population Y?

Today the help of expert geneticists Tábita Hünemeier and Marcos Araújo Castro e Silva we're going to discuss one of the biggest questions in archaeology and prehistory, who was Population Y?

This research connects remote Indian islands, to the mountains of Vietnam, to caves deep in Brazil. It's fascinating stuff.

Quick note Some images at 17:53 are not of the Onge, but of the neighbouring Jarawa ethnic group. I try really hard to source accurate images and video footage but for very small groups that is not always possible.

$1000 of the Myheritage sponsorship was donated to Amazon Watch in appreciation of the help provided by Native Groups in understanding our past. Much love to all!

I've been waiting for this one.
I've only read a little on the subject and have been looking forward to your opinions on it.

If ancient sea fairers could find their way to Madagascar, New Zealand, Easter Island, and Hawaii, i don't see why they couldn't have made it to America also.

Wonderful as ever. Sometimes getting your mind to stretch back that far ends up melting it in the process. Solid stuff to think about though. Thank you for posting.

Generally, when you see a pattern where one culture or phenotype or genotype is really scattered across many parts of the world, but they are discontinuous and surrounded by another group all around them, the scattered group is older. They were largely displaced by a later migration and only survived in a few pockets. Another example is the Finno-uralic language group, which is surrounded by Indo-European languages.

Fascinating. Stefan, please leave the maps up on the screen longer. I want to look at them. I thought I had watched all your videos..I don’t know how I missed it.

the study of genetics is a favorite subject, filled with much interest as well as a work in progress, that makes me wish for a long life just so that I may learn more and more as time goes by.

14:00 I appreciate the honesty on this. it has to be talked about to be able to repair what can be repaired.

River rafted down the middle fork of the salmon about 15 years ago. I want to take my son some day. It was like a week, your clip near the beginning looked so familiar of a bend I remember having hot springs we overnighted at halfway down the run

the enormity of time. that’s the almost unfathomable fact in evolution. You convey that truth well. A complex topic well delivered. enjoyed

It's Transpacific movement of Austronesian people's. You look at Neolithic monuments on Malta. Stone age people's had advanced seafaring capabilities. They went from Australia to Easter Island to South America. The Maoris has advanced seafaring capability, the Vikings made it to Newfoundland and perhaps further.
