Animal shelter work is not for the faint of heart. Staff face long hours of physically demanding labor and emotional fatigue on a daily basis — often coming in early or leaving well after closing to meet the demand for care. They see some of the worst cases of neglect imaginable and do everything in their power to help these animals rise above their past and find their happily ever after.

It’s not a glamorous job or lucrative one, but for those who dedicate their lives to shelter animals, it’s a way of life. In this series, we’ll explore the challenges, heartbreaks, and happy endings that come with shelter work as we hear from the staff of Greenwood county animal shelter and Humane Society in Greenwood, South Carolina.

We sit down with their executive director, marketing and placement coordinators, customer care specialist, and vet-and animal care techs to learn what shelter workers want their community to know about companion animals and the shelter system.

We cover everything from the importance of sterilization, breed stereotypes, helping pets adjust to their new home, the challenges and rewards of shelter work, and hear about their favorite rescue stories.
