This video, filmed in real-time on a hot day aims to demonstrate how to paint a complicated woodland scene. I concentrate on painting masses, rather than detail, capturing the rich colour and tones of the dappled light and long shadows.

Love your use of the word indicate across all your tutorials because that is how I desire to paint. Not realistically but just to “indicate” the object or idea.

Deep violet, snappy orange, sunlit yellow...all framed in a variety of earthy sienna and muted blues. I adore your vision and technique. You've shared really great instruction through quite an intimidating subject. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Another great video Andrew. Simplify the complex is an important lesson for all of us that practice painting outdoors.

I knew this was going to be good and it really was. Thank you Andrew. The light and shadow on the foreground tree is beautiful. I love how you simplified the scene but still stayed true to it.

So nice to see the build-up of this scene, and I loved the sound of the singing birds and water stream !! Thank you so much!

Thanks so much! I think I understand “painting colour/light” now. Your commentary is really helpful in connecting what’s happening on the paper and the end goal. Brilliant! 🇨🇦

As soon as I discovered this channel, I already learned 1. wet on wet is not compulsory 2. scratching old colors is not good for the freshness of much more....thanks a lot! 🌹🍀🌲

Thanks Andrew, I really enjoyed watching you build up the tones to show off the dappled sunlight and shadow, and beautifully filmed too. A real treat 😊

Have watched this same video several times. Actually, I have watched all your videos over and over to get all the knowledge I can from them!!! This one really helps me remember to think how to simplify a scene. Still learning to loosen up. Not paint an exact copy. Thank you!!!

Beautiful. I love your style. Enjoy your warm weather if you can. It will be 38 here today in Oregon USA. We are high desert so this is about normal for us. Soon winter will be here.

Brilliant. Fresh and clean. I’m surrounded by beautiful woods that have always stymied me. Well no more! Thank you once again for invaluable advice. I’ll be off to the woods this week.
