I believe that Eric is not wrong. What I do believe is the establishment has not considered the "load bearing wall" of public trust that is necessary for a stable working government. We might know that the system favors the well placed but what happens when general public suddenly understands that nothing they do matters? How far off can torches and pitchforks be when a representative republic loses its representation?

The founding fathers of the United States did not intend to create a democracy. They intended to create a republic. They define this as a system of government combining the best elements of monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy. This was meant to be achieved by a balance of power between three branches with the legislative element being elected by the people directly and the presidency being elected by an electoral college. The founding fathers feared direct democracy because they feared mob rule such as that exercised during the French revolution. This is why they did not believe in holding plebiscites.
