LATE SEASON | The 5 Phases of Elk Hunting

To be successful elk hunting, you need to find an elk. To do that, you need to understand the needs of elk and where they go to satisfy those needs. In this series sponsored by Leupold Optics, Randy breaks down the 5 phases of elk hunting with easy to understand explanations.

In this video of the series, Randy covers what you need to know about the late season. This starts around November 1st through the rest of the open hunting season. The late season is very similar to the post rut but there are a few differences. One difference, is the bulls often go from being solo to starting to regroup into bachelor groups.

The other difference is that their sanctuary is going to be lower on the transition range compared to the post rut. The highest priority in this season is still sanctuary, sanctuary, sanctuary. To find a bull elk, you need to find an area far away from hunters due to either distance or topography.

Excellent video. Thank you for all the great information. I just finished my first DIY elk hunt in Colorado and scored on a bull during the third rifle season in Colorado

Good information randy, I live in North west Washington the hunting is a little different than the areas you hunt. some of what your talking about is correct. I've used as much as I can to make improvements to this area I will let you know how it goes in November so far it's been hard to find there hiding place

Great Video Randy. I have a late season bull tag in Utah that Starts Nov 9 this year. This gives me an idea of where to look. Thanks!

Does this apply to spikes? Or are they with the cows?

I'll got watch the rest of the series, but ask my questions anyway. I'm hunting cow elk in Colorado gmu 38. I'm looking for videos to help me get familiar with elk habits, preferences, etc., when they move, where they go in various weather conditions, stuff like that. Anything you recommend? My season goes to Jan 31, still time to figure this out.

Would you look lower for late season cows?

Anyone know if they find the same groups or different groups each year?

Randy, we do not have elevation as a consideration for elk hunting in Manitoba so how would you distinguish rut, post-rut and late season locations in Manitoba? We have lots of shallow lakes interspersed with prairie marsh and Aspen/Oak forest with farmland when there is enough elevation for it to be dry enough for farming.
