Well theres another person who also wrote for sonic 3 and their band is called Jetsons and they used hard times and then composed it into an sega genesis sound which got composed into like a different soundtrack and different notes how ever i still hear hard times in the final base on the notes and composing

I swear to god, the bass in "smooth criminal" isnt actual slap bass and is a synth that uses the sega genesis soundfont. I have no evidence to support this exept for the fact you hear the note come to compete and sudden halts, almost jittering between notes strung together in rapid succesion. The bass in smooth criminal also caries that iconic digital tone that personally I've only ever heard in the music of sega genesis games.
