How To Hand Launch / Catch The DJI Mavic Air 2 & Mavic Mini

In this video, I go over how to hand launch and hand catch the DJI Mavic Air 2 as well as the Mavic Mini. Due to the small size of these drones, they are both a nice size to learn how to hand launch and hand land. For the most part, I always recommend using a landing pad or hard surface for take-off and landings when possible, but there are some situations where it is just not possible and when its good to learn how to hand launch.

When catching, it's safer to hover the craft slightly above head level, hovering about 5ft away. Then, with your fingers OFF the sticks, walk over to the craft and grab the drone from the side (not from the rear) using your right hand. Hold the craft in place, do not pull it down. Simultaneously to grabbing, push down on the left stick. Wait 3 seconds for the motors to turn off, while holding the drone in place above your head. Reasons for this process: 1. It's safer and easier to grab a craft that's not moving, in a hover. 2. Everything happens above your head, less risk of head/eye injury (especially if there's wind). 3. You can see the craft better when it's just above your head, being safer and easier to grab. 4. Grabbing from the side is ergonomically easier, plus if it's a Mavic 2 the sensors on the rear/front won't make it move away as you approach. 5. Using the right hand to catch allows your left hand to push the left stick down, also more ergonomically safe. 6. Keeping your fingers off the sticks during the grab prevent accidental stick movement, which can move the drone during the hover.

Off topic. I love the Alfalfa/Orchard grass hay field you live beside. You must get some nice farm footage.

Great use of catching there. I've had my fair share of experience of the DJI mavic cutting your fingers and that pain is NO JOKE. Great video!

3 out of 4 times hand grabbing, the propellers go in overdrive while i have it in landing mode

Useful video, thanks for it. I would wear wrap-around safety goggles to do this. They are small and light and cheap. Finger skin can be sewn up, but a blade to your eyeball is another thing entirely.

good job ive seen this, i just took mine out for my first flight and i ended up cutting my hand in several places on the blades because I tried to land it on a wall ( which I had just landed on three times previous) and it went to far to the side of the wall so it was going to fall off and my instinct was to grab it, and obviously that did not turn out well. so now I know how to grab it from the air I wont have to land it in a dodgy area again. thx

I use a 2 feet high foldable stool top. Placing a taped cardboard over the top to use as a landing pad.

Struggling to find the setting in the new DJI fly app to turn off the landing sensors (like I did on the original Air) which certainly makes hand catching WAY safer and easier! Any idea where they’re hidden them?!

Thank you for this info. I have Mavic 2 Pro, do the propellers stop automatically once you grab it?

Using the hand launch, would it create some issue in the horizon (tilt) since the calibration would not be entirely leveled?

I went to catch it but the propellors went into overdrive and pulled away. I then pressed the landing button and as it went to land the sensors kicked in. To get the blades to turn off, are you supposed to turn the drone upside down?
