Dr. Sara Mednick is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside. Her work on sleep research continues to shape the way we understand the importance of healthy sleep hygiene. In her talk, she argues for everyone to take a break.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Brilliant talk!! I am a serial napper, have been, for as far as I can remember, also a lover of vacations, breaks and a good R&R, (rest and relaxation, not Rum and Rumba hahaha!!)

Our Western go-go-go culture is leading us to a cliff, at maximum speed, GDP has outlived its Importance, A tiny Kingdom in the Himalayas - Bhutan, measures what's Important - Gross National Happiness.

Thanks Sara - I hope the policy wonks, are paying attention NOW!!!

Very interesting talk.

I don't like to sleep at all, but I can recognize the usefulness of sleep and dreaming.

From today on, I am going to develop new habits concerning healthy sleeping:

1. I'm going to take a nap whenever I feel I need to do it.
2. I'm going to take a nap on Wednesday afternoons for less than 60 minutes.
3. I'm going to use my breaks wisely: meditation, exercise, videogames and creative activities.
4. I'm going to sleep more.

These are my new challenges for 2016!

I have only taken three two week vacations in my life. I’m now 65. I did however take an hour nap every workday at lunch most of my life. Until about ten years ago. I feel it too. I need to go back to naps again. Made a huge difference.

Great Sara! We agree with your suggestions on getting more rest and balance, just like each yoga class ends with savasana (final resting pose). Good work! Namaste.

Back in the 60’s, our small town in the Midwest, shut down businesses on Wednesday afternoons ...

Its not just nap, but time for workout gives the best results

I wish US schools knew this. Especially with all of the research on the detriments of sleep deprivation.

French schools do not have school on Wednesday afternoon. I understand better now :-)

Wednesday afternoon is time off for University students in England. Many students exercise in the afternoon and party at night...

I would like to take more nap during the day, but I don t have time. I work all day long and I study at night. I started to meditate TM and it is working to me, I am feeling more ``restful´´, but here in São Paulo city we take our lifes at full speed and I hate it

The solution should be reduce the hours of work and the philosophy of being succesful. My ambition put pressure on me and on the people who is around me. Nobody said that. Before the industrialization, people did not work so many hours as today and people had less distraction around.

Isn't the 40 hour work week in the USA based on standardization from back during the rise of manufacturing and industrialization?

Now if we could just get people to stop honking and beeping their damn cars every time they unlock or lock them with the sound waking us up in our homes or taking a nap at the park. ridiculousness.

Average 30 hour work week in France and 25 hour in the Netherlands? Where has she got that from? Thats not true at all!

No no... don't take nap! Sleeping more at night is superior, because it is sweeter than daytime sleep! If you have no sleep debt, you’re actually unable to fall asleep during the day. If you can’t do that, then nap is the next best solution. It is not my idea, our ancient wisdom says that. By the way guys, I'm from India. If you need any help, you can communicate me.

This is not surprising at all. Centuries ago Leonardo da Vinci used to take a nap every few hours... and it surely helped his creativity...

In France it's not 30 but 35. Interesting talk, i'm just wondering... How to "learn" to have naps? Cuz if I take a "nap" I'm out for houuurs not minutes...
