How should I address a small duplicate content issue?

If you had to deal with short-term duplicated content on a news site (perhaps publishing a story on two different URLs over one day), what would you do in order to avoid any penalty from a duplicate content filter?

interesting; he said; if you have duplicated content; they would share the same pagerank ... so, there's no duplicated content filter? it just makes you lose out by cutting the pagerank in smaller amounts spread over the different copies .... is that what he said; slip of the tongue?

I place a copyright clause on most all my items on my site.  Does Google consider a copyright clause as duplicate content?  How can I avoid being hit for duplicate content and still use the same copyright clause on a majority of my item/product pages?

Here's a thought. If it is one news story that continues to develop, why not publish everything on one single URL and update as the story unfolds?

For example, would be the URL, and the body would have:
Updated at 9:00 - something happened
Updated at 8:45 - something happened
Updated at 8:30 - something happened

In my thinking, this would keep all of the content under one URL (avoiding duplicate) all while building authority because the entire story is on one page. 

What are your thoughts?

I was thinking along the lines of sharing content vs. plagiarism. I'm no journalist, but I think that's worth saving. I'd love to be able to use the "rel=canonical" someday. :)
