Dr. Stalin Ramprakash, Consultant in Paediatric Haematology, Oncology & BMT; Dr. Manjiri Somashekhar, Lead & Senior Consultant in Paediatric Surgery; and Dr. Raghuram CP, Consultant in Paediatric Haematology, Oncology & BMT, emphasize the critical importance of awareness and early detection for childhood cancer. With around 50,000 children diagnosed with cancer in India each year, it’s essential to recognize that childhood cancers differ significantly from adult cancers, as they are not linked to lifestyle or environmental factors.

Most childhood cancers, including leukemias and brain tumors, can be effectively treated when identified early, leading to cure rates of 70-95% for certain types. Parents should be vigilant for symptoms such as persistent fevers lasting more than three weeks, unusual swelling in joints, unexplained bruising, severe headaches, and sudden changes in behavior or appetite. Early intervention at specialized centers can make a significant difference in outcomes, ensuring that children receive the comprehensive care they need.
