I personally believed that it was very, very much possible that our entire understanding would change once again on many fronts, and still think even more changes in our understanding are yet to come. Historically, humans have continued to change their understanding on the view of what's outside of our earth for quite some time and have just barely actually left our planet.

Even when we think we know, we'll never know for a long, long time.

What about the idea that our universe did have a big bang but, other universes also had big bangs at different times. We are looking to the outer reaches of our universe looking at galaxies from other universes coming into view. That would also explain the dark matter issue where scientists feel there is more dark matter than what we can explain in our universe. The whole universe is much bigger than what we currently think it is. In other words, what we call our universe I just a small piece of an entirely bigger universe with big bangs happening over and over again all at different times.
