The worst way to start a gig 🥲

If you've been watching my stuff for awhile, you know I frequently show my mistakes. I think it's extremely important to deter the "only posting highlights" on social media. Although, this video makes me want to vomit and I would much rather delete it from existence and forget it ever happened.

I'm used to playing this tune in Bb with a different vocalist (that's the key my chart is in) so when the band said "Boogie Shoes in the original key" I thought nothing of it. This was the moment I learned that the original key is B.

The embarrassment from this experience will hopefully lead me to never play this line in the wrong key ever again. But for now, I'm young and unseasoned, and want to share with you guys the learning experiences I'm having (even when they're extremely painful to watch). Thanks for watching❤️

The band:
Kenny Stockard - Vocals
Anne Celedonia - Vocals
Denzel Chismar-Oliver - Bass
Ian Brown - Keys
Mila Shadel - Guitar

The paranoia when you hear something that sounds off is a crazy experience

The timid half playing after messing up is the most relatable thing ever. My instructor used to tell me if its wrong and confident then it’s not wrong, especially if you’re playing at a party or whatever where the audience isn’t musically inclined.

Dude, the fact that you’re willing to post your mistakes speaks volumes. This made me feel a bit better about my own mistakes in gigs. You’re a sharp thinker!

My music mentor once told me,
“Just roll with it, bro. They don’t know a thing.” ❤️

Being a good musician doesn’t mean you never make mistakes (though we prepare sufficiently to avoid most) but what truly makes a musician good is their ability to adapt and adjust to mistakes or unexpected situations.

The other day my whole band forgot to tell the trumpet player we were doing the song down a half step 😂 💀

My heart rate if that happened to me: 📈📈📈

Im a church pianist. When I first started, I used to be terrified when the priest started chanting because I had to guess the key and the progression on the spot with hundreds of people watching. I always wished to die everytime I blundered.

It happens to all of us. The sheer terror when you hear something very off and realize it’s you.😭 We’ve all done it. One of my worst performances happened when I had this wretched memory slip and I skipped an entire bar of the piece and my accompanist just kept going… it was the climax, the most important line, and being that I was so early due to skipping, I stood there like an asshole. All of my professors were there. Ah the good old days.😭Props to you for posting! Mega teacher moment.

Thanks for posting this! It happens! It’s reality. Tonight, I was playing a trio gig and we were starting Sunny (an instrumental version). The guitarist set it up. I came in strong with the first note and realized he was in a different key (we had the key written on the setlist, but I think he forgot). It’s originally in the key I started it in, but the key he played it is in common too. Luckily I knew it in that other key and shifted immediately. The bassist shifted too. This is part of making live music! I applaud your sharing the experience.

Pitch drift is a hell of a phenomenon. It usually happens to me when the bass is super loud, or if it's a really long gig. I've found ear plugs can help, but it's scary when it happens - you start doubting everything!

Thanks for sharing that. That's super brave of you. I listened to it twice and I got vicarious anxieties both times. The whole ordeal felt like eternity

Im a trumpeter and saxophonist and I can really relate to the part where you are not sure whether you are hitting the wrong note or just voicing it wrong😅. Thank you for making me realise I’m not the only one it happens to

I always enjoy your videos when I stumble across them. Just the breakdowns of your performances and honesty with where your head is at is really cool to watch.

It is indeed important to show bad experiences as well. Those will teach you far more than those you fluke or get right the first time.
You're awesome even when screwing things up!

Mad respect to you for positing this. I’m a French horn teacher/free-lancer, and I’ve had some embarrassing moments. Thanks for showing people that musicians are people to. You’re amazing.
