I’ve started listening along to these livestream recordings when I’m in the shower, as a way to relax and avoid anxious rumination. It has been working wonderfully! Thank you so much for sharing these.

My mind was just blown at 40:45 with the idea of this historical cooking video in the 21st century talking about historical cooking in the 18th century where they were talking about historical cooking in the 13th century!!!

There’s one major use of pottage in modern English: Esau’s “bargain”. I’m sure linguists have a dedicated term for otherwise rare/extinct words that survive only through a single major work (and it's not just the King James translation. Shakespeare has produced plenty of whatever this is called. When's the last time "hoist" meant something other than lifted or anyone called a breaching charge a "petard"?).

I know today we serve soups in bread bowls, which can be eaten afterwards, and during my school’s Renaissance Days (that was 1989 fwiw) we did little bread puck things that were supposed to be used as plates (except I ate mine) so it’s reasonable to ponder if the sellers in the street had bread bowls…

If the accused offer to pay the shop owner from whom the seals were stolen, the case may have been dropped at that.
And chili is a stew.

Were potages always boiled, or were a few baked? Was potage the ancestor of casseroles?

Wasn't pottage a think soup made with whatever was on hand. Soup came from the French word soupe which means broth or liquid

2:15 I am going to add the word "decoction" to my regular vocabulary whenever possible. That is a fun word.

The world silver spoon litterally means made out of silver. We only call culttlery silver ware because it was made out of "silver" or other high quality metals. Not impurity cheap aluminum metals we have now.

Didn't people carry around a cup? I know hippies that always carry a cup for drinking or eating stuff like this when it's offered. (regarding the segment about street vendors selling soup.
