Join me as I attempt to repair my broken Commodore 64! I'll open it up and swap some chips around and also use the C64 Dead Test Cartridge to attempt to figure out what's wrong with the machine. Stay tuned to see if I can fix it!

I enjoyed watching and continue to be impressed with your computer knowledge! The captions you provided to explain acronyms were a nice addition! Hope the Commodore will be working for you soon! 😊

So interesting to watch along and see if anything would work!
Definitely a shame that you weren’t able to solve it this time, but I wouldn’t have even known where to start 🤪
It’s pretty cool to see you try everything you know all the same.
Will be hoping a solution is found and following along for the next updates ☺️
Thanks for the video Josh!

There were 7 flashes from the dead test. That indicates a problem with ram. The flash code chart shows for 7 flashes is U9 or U10 depending on the revision of your C64 board.

Josh, once you removed those CIA chips your name was placed on the bad boy register. That's almost as bad as releasing the magic smoke. Thanks again for the fun video. You may want to invest in a chip puller.

Awesome video Josh! I think even if that were a brand new C64 it might not work out of box. Time is real. Capacitors and boards experience oxidization and corrosion. I have seen a brand new NES completely corroded, never used. Time is just a factor. Awesome pick up and awesome video!

Wow what a bummer. I was sure it was going to fire up there at some point. To be continued!

Yellow is "Composite" - both luma and chroma combined. The black connector is S-Video, which has separate luma and chroma pins and gives a better image, if you have the appropriate connector on your TV.

1st check the 5VDC voltage of your Electroware PSU, if it gives more than 5.2VDC, it's just as dangerous as your old one. I burned one of my c64s breadbin with it, but it happens over time. In my case 2 months. The voltage to be safe is 5.1VDC. Breadbins are more sensitive to voltage than c64c because the latter power more components with 5VDC. When you have flashes with the deadtest cartridge 781220, this means that the PLA is working and that it could be the memory or one of the memory multiplexers. The deadtest cartridge you are using works in multimax mode and it bypasses the ROMs. So once you have images with the 781220, you need to test with the deadtest 586220 (use rom) which is not in multimax to see if the C64 starts.

Hello. Just wondering if you ever got it working? Those flashes on the dead test have always been accurate for me:) usually ends up being at least 2 ram chips. Good to have that modern PLA, because the old one will go eventually

I know how you could have fixed it Josh; return it to sender! You got swindled! I hope you reached out to the seller. That is a definite bummer…

"very clean inside" ... apart from the blatantly obvious electrolyte salts all over the ram chips... you need to watch a lot of adrians digital basement before continuing
