This Week in Volcano News; 21,000 Evacuated at Ethiopian Volcano, Volcanic Island Grows

A massive intrusion of magma has triggered more than 20,000 people to evacuate, created hydrothermal explosions, and Ethiopia's largest earthquake since 1989. While this is our top story, there was also a surprising revelation in Iceland as a harmonic tremor indicating the movement of magma was detected at a volcano which has not erupted in more than 1,000 years. And, in the nation of Tonga, the Home Reef volcano greatly expanded during the last several weeks. This video will discuss these stories and list the 41 volcanoes which are actively erupting around the planet.

Note: This video's thumbnail image displays a photo taken this week from the Kilauea volcano.

Saw the Ethiopian volcano being reported on some news channels, always love how early you are to stuff like this.

I'm really thankful that we now know enough about volcanology that we can tell people to evacuate in time.

You're right on the money for Fentale after reporting it last week. I know there's future maps out there to show a seaway but this is a primer on how its done. Keep up the good work!

Ive always enjoyed your videos. Your voice is soothing and all of your content is educational and gives a very complex understanding of the geological process for all, regardless of our education. Thanks!

Thanks as always, Geology Hub! I hope those at Ethiopia are adequately prepared or dealing with the situation.

After the patterns witnessed in Iceland, I'm a little wary of calling the earthquake decrease 'good news'. That plastic zone'll get you every time.

Thank you so much for this important information ✨

The video footage of the erupting geysers/hydrothermal explosions, in Ethiopia, is kind of terrifying. The people who filmed it got extremely close to it, I'd guess about 50 feet from it.

Interesting to see the hydrothermal eruption of a mud volcano driven by the magma intrusion at depth in Ethiopia.

I'm from Ethiopia, and I assure you that the government has not evacuated a single person until now. And the villagers who has migrated to other villages have no food or water. They need assistance ASAP

It's good to support good work. Volcanoes have been a special interest of mine since childhood, and perhaps somewhere in the multiverse I ended up a volcanologist. Thank you for the work you do, particularly for the folks in the global south that get less attention than areas like Iceland.
