I think it's alright for the price. I think it's not enough upgrades over the h6 to be worth the extra money. You can pick up a used h6 for half the price which is a great recorder. The futuristic features that I look for in a new recorder are the 32 bit float. Basically means your recording can never peak. The other new feature that sound devices just unleashed is the noise cancelling. It's a $300 upgrade for certain Sound Devices recorders but so AWESOME. In the past if you wanted to do this while recording the portable device you'd plug into the recorder was $3000.... now you can do it within the recorder. So now you can tell that AC hum to chill out and deliver cleaner audio without needing extra noise cancelling in post.

So I received the H8, still boxed after winning the Ebay auction for 200 euros. I have to admit that it is the ugliest thing I've ever bought but it's well worth the money even at the retail price. The preamps are soooo much better than the old H4N and even the H6 I tested a couple of years ago. They're very clean and have enough juice to power any mic I have, including the smb7.. The multitrack to sd card works flawlessly and the xy pair it ships with are great. Headphone amp was too weak for my DT 770s so I tried my mobile phone in ear phones and it was perfect - don't really see the need to buy new cans for the H8.I was pretty sure that I was going to sell it on straight away before it arrived but it's an absolute keeper...And hey, looks ain't everything:-)

Also, having some fairly extensive experience with ZOOM recorders their screens scratch super easily and I'm pretty sure the fact that it has so many functions (as opposed to the other recorders which prioritize straight multichannel recording) will mean it needs updates and be constant hell to keep updated.

Btw, how often do y'all on frame forge half to deal with updates for your gear (not including the obvious for software like after effects)

One big feature this has over the H6 is the ability to wirelessly control the unit using an iPhone or iPad device if you buy the Bluetooth module. It’s compatible with the newer audio capsules.

Still, for people who can afford to pay a bit extra, the Zoom F6 would be another option because of the dual ADC and 32 bit float.

Well for touch not belonging in the pro audio world, Sound Devices all have touch and works great but here I'd worry about it getting scratches like my H4n did. Also with the expansion you can add 4 extra XLR with phantom power too.

I've had and enjoyed a few Zoom products over the years and I have some reservations about this ugly bit of gear. However I've just won an auction for one on ebay for 200 euros which is probably a steal. If I don't get on with it I guess I'll get at least what I paid for it.. Will post my thoughts after taking it for a spin..
