The real big story should be that Melenchon's supporter were polling as pretty evenly split between Macron and Le Pen as their second choice. That's sort of like Sanders supporters splitting between Clinton and Trump... Which wasn't close to even but did happen to a surprising degree.
Seems to me like there are a lot of anti-status-quo voters who really don't have a coherent ideology other than "not this"

I think what happened in the USA, is cultural, you know in the late 90s the Republican party was economly liberal as in they wanted deregulation and low interest rates and decentralization of the banks but they were also consvertive socially, in comes Trump, who's a libertarian in almost all senses of the word, and the shift is really how the internet content has affected the political spectrum, afterall it was Gabby Giford who was attacked due to trolling and not McCain. And a lot of Trump voters are open about their weed and porn consumption, so I'd say that it's not that people secretly supported Trump rather that Trump unlocked what we might call the troll vote, the gamer bro vote. And how we move forward depends on what happens next election cycle in the USA.
