Did You Know In SAVING PRIVATE RYAN…

Tom Sizemore was dealing with a very bad drug addiction, and Steven game him an ultimatum. They made a deal that he would be blood tested on set every day of filming, but if he failed, the part of Sergeant Horvath would be re-shot with someone else, no matter how close to the end of production they were. Tom agreed, and he managed to pass every test while he was on set. He would later relapse throughout his career though. While filming, Steven Spielburg attached drills to the side of the cameras that were turned on to make the camera shake during explosions. Later, the crew’s photographer told him that there were shaker lenses for cameras that accomplished the same effect, but Steven thought he had invented a brand new technique.

Tom tried really hard man, he did. He just couldn't win that war. Hope he found peace before passing

Steve found a cheaper alternative, i imagine the shaker lense for a cinema camera costs 5figures

Tom had that iconic line “Someday we might look back on this and decide that saving Private Ryan was the one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole godawful shitty mess.” A great actor who will be remembered by many of us. Rest in Peace, Tom

Tom may have had his demons, like many of us do, but. Tom was a great actor and SPR just wouldn't have been the same without him, he was great in Black Hawk Down as well on top of several other movies.

I wish you could have beat your addictions Tom because you were a great actor. We'll all miss you, I hope you're finally at peace Tom. Godspeed....

I remember seeing some VH1 or some such network show about celebrities with addictions. They showcased the stuff they all did… when they started playing clips of him in Saving Private Ryan he cried like a child. He just kept saying “what happened to me?”

I’ve been there. It’s rough. I’m glad there are many who will never know that feeling.

I found out a couple of days ago. I was sad to hear that, Tom was my fav "secondary" actor. His role in Dreamcatcher felt like redemption to me, as in the last moments he realizes he must do the right thing and he died doing it.

Kudos to Tom Sizemore. He had his demons and his failures, same as all of us. I respect him for standing up to them.

Really happy he stuck to it because I can’t imagine another actor taking his place as Sarge

Tom was my cousin. He struggled to do many things in his life. His choices were not always the best, but he accepted the responsibility for them. In the end of his life he tried to mend relationships with his children and be a good man. He brought joy to millions of people and will never be forgotten.

You could detect that his character was deeply haunted, but now I know it was real. Tom was battling for his life

He's a big reason this movie is so good. I bought his acting more than any other actor including Hanks.

i think it also added to the stress and overall look of a man in combat cause he played it very well
