I want to share my experience of participating in the AGT West Palm auditions. I'm an award-winning realistic visual artist in Palm Beach, FL and I brought 5 30"x40" masterpieces with me - I remember it was freezing cold as we slowly worked our way into the auditorium - after signing in I was given a number and led to the waiting pavilion - a while later someone came and asks us to go outdoors to shoot a promo - Nick was the host - the men in charged told us to jump and scream while Nick did his introduction - take, after take, after endless take, people were exhausted, it was brutally cold. My audition came near the end, I entered a room with cameras and a few men sitting at the tables - I set up my artworks on the easels and waited to hear something, but the men just sat there mouthed open looking at my art - finally one of the men said: Wow! You are amazingly talented. Another man asked me: What are you going to do for us? I replied: You are looking at it. Another man asked: Do you have an act? I replied: No, I'm an artist, not a performer. He said they were looking for singers, dancers, stand up, etc...I replied: I thought this was America's Got "Talent" and not America's Got Performers. He said: I'm sorry. I couldn't believe my ears. I told him: You don't have a clue the struggle and sacrifices I've gone through to finally be before you in this room and you are telling me that you are denying me my chance to show my talent to America because I am not a performer? This is outrageous and discriminatory and I don't believe that you are being fair to my talent or myself as a person. I folded my easels, picked my artwork and walked out. AGT should stop dismissing visual artists and embrace them instead - people love art just as much as performers and I honestly think you are hurting and crushing the dreams of visual artists by not giving them a chance in your show.
