As a guy who pointed airplanes in the right direction for 26 years, among other things, Bill has a good take on this that I love. Sure we worked hard to repair and maintain our aircraft, but the pilot takes the real chance on us doing the job right and he/she makes it home. And having a sense of humor in the military is a good thing. A good practical joke or a little "dark" humor gets you through the tough times.

I’m not a vet, but his sentiment here toward the word “hero” seems to be aligned with those who are. My Grandpa was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne and saw combat in the Battle of Luzon. When our local paper wrote a story about him, he hit ‘em with this quote, “Don’t call a regular soldier a hero. A hero is someone who did something above and beyond the normal in a difficult situation. What I did was a standard military-type operation: I was shot at and I shot back, the normal wartime routine.”

True enough. I spent 20 years in the Navy, and I ain't no hero either. Nobody needs to thank me for my service, because I got 2 degrees out of it, a lifetime pension, lots of training & experience, and many other benefits. I'm the one who needs to thank people for paying their taxes, which paid for me being what I am now.

" Dude I called you, I seen it first "

I agree with him. I'm retired Army and I hate it when people say, "Thank you for your service". It's like forced pleasantries. Though it's called the service, I was paid, I volunteered, I did what I was asked to do and I'm totally fine making fun of the guy who points.

2:17 _"conniption"_ = a fit of rage or hysterics.
I've learnt a new word.

I love the slow realization in the crowd when he tells what he said about the military. You can basically hear the audience thinking to themselves: "I mean, he's not wrong."

I was a career firefighter for eight years. I hated it when everyone kept thanking me for being a firefighter. I told them it was just another job. Sure a few times I really helped people and they said thanks and it was appreciated. But when strangers feel the need to thank you for just doing a job it gets to the point where it really doesn’t mean anything.

'It was absurd, I wasn't being serious, you children!' Can they play that every time a comedian has to apologise for a joke?

Seems like the only people who get upset over military jokes are civilians who never served a day in their life.

I was in the Navy for 8 years. I served aboard two aircraft carriers running their nuclear power plants. I 100% agree with him. I trained to do some heroic things but never once was in a firefight or combatted a sinking ship. At the same time I was doing that my brother was in Iraq and Afghanistan on the front lines. We may have both had an impact but huge difference.
