That happened to my ex- mother-in-law. She is one of the greatest women I know and lives for her grandbabies. One of her sons was in a very long term relationship with someone and they already had a daughter. When they had their son, there were a lot of questions. My eMIL would love on the baby and cared for him everyday while they worked. After the couple split up, her son took his ex to court for paternity. This was nearly a year later. It was proven that the baby was NOT his child. He acted like he was relieved, but I know it hurt him. And eMIL was devastated. Because it was like a switch was flipped. She was so attached to the child, and suddenly she just never saw him ever again. She grieved that loss for a long time. What became a joke among the siblings in their family wasn't funny to her. It doesn't just affect the men - that's bad enough, just awful. There are grandparents, aunts and uncles who love these children and suddenly have a very profound connection severed with only a few words. And I won't even get into to impact it has on the very children whose identity is in question. Especially if the father cannot be found, or for some reason or another the mom doesn't want to give that name up. That child grows up questioning themselves because of someone else's actions.
