In 2019, leaders and representatives from all EU countries will be negotiating the framework for the next seven-year budget of the European Union, sometimes referred to as ‘the future of Europe in numbers’. This ‘Multiannual Financial Framework’ reflects the priorities of the EU and sets the parameters for which around €1 trillion of EU money will be spent over the seven-year period from 2021-2027.

On 28 February 2019, the IIEA hosted an event in Limerick City with a panel leading economists and politicians, who discussed how this money would be best allocated, and whether the EU budget should be increased to include new policy priorities, or stay at its current level. The discussion touched on many important parts of the European Union, from agriculture to defence, and members of the audience had a chance to ask questions to the panel and share their opinions.

Debate Chair: Cian McCarthy, Senior Researcher (FOEU27, Future of Europe Group and YPN Chair)

Deirdre Clune MEP, Fine Gael MEP for the South Constituency

Why is the multiannual framework 7 years when parliaments and therefore democracy lifecycle is 5 years. That seems weird / stupid
