I have a 2002 Trek 7500fx [ hand built in the USA ] still a great frame. I also have a 2012 Trek Domane 4.5, rim brakes. Light, fast, and much better looking than modern bikes.

Absolute best bikes. The only issue im having is the gear ratio. That literally the only thing that modern bikes are better at. They have wider gear ratios to spin on the climbs, but then again they have pizza cutters. For me sweet spot is any good bike with rim brakes and long cage rear derailleur (11-32 or 11-34 cassette).

Totally agree about carbon frames, they last forever. If you have ever cut down a carbon steerer you will know how strong it is. Cutting a carbon steerer is a work out, and much harder than cutting alloy.
