On today’s Hedgehog Report we are featuring the miraculous meerkat and its broader family of the mongoose!

Mongooses have neuromuscular junctions equipped with acetylcholine receptors that are less responsive to snake venom neurotoxins. This adaptation enables them to survive snake bites from venomous species that would prove fatal to many other animals. This remarkable trait has made mongooses skilled snake predators and contributes to their survival in regions where venomous snakes are prevalent.

This is meerkat

and it’s no mere cat.

but rather, it’s a mongoose.

*footage of halo 3 mongoose race*

no, no, not that mongoose, for those of you born between 1990 and 1996

but these mongooses, the ones that fights snakes.

*snake bitten mgs snake death – goes to codec of hedgehog*

You see, Mongooses possess a remarkable resistance to snake venom due to specialized acetylcholine receptors in their neuromuscular junctions.
*codec turns off*
Now I Know that sounds technical, but suffice to say, these receptors prevent venom from affecting them, allowing mongooses to attack and kill venomous snakes without succumbing to their toxins.

getting bit, however, still hurts.
