I'm studying Lacanian psychoanalysis lately and it let me appreciate this intro a lot more: particularly the part in which time freezes, yet Lain keeps walking. Lain is a creature of what psychoanalysis calls the "symbolic order": language, logic, information. She doesn't really exist within the imaginary; her body is hardly relevant. Even when all bodies stop their movement, Lain remains in motion, for she doesn't need a body to be herself.

I just finished watching through Serial Experiments Lain for the first time today and man I think it's gonna stay with me. If you can handle deep pyschological shows with an eerie atmosphere and haven't watched it yet, I definitely recommend.
