10. Downtown LA
While Los Angeles, California seems like a very glamorous place, besides the Hollywood sign, production studios, and vibrant city, there are many dark secrets. A big one was hidden underneath the city streets. The city, like others across the US, struggled in the face of prohibition in the late 20s, and what originally began life as 11 miles of service tunnels soon became a secret way to access basement speakeasies.
9. Alhambra Palace
The Alhambra Palace is a stunning palace and fortress complex in Granada, Spain. Constructed in the 800’s on the remains of Roman ruins, it became the royal residence and court of Granada in the mid 13th century after the establishment of the Nasrid Kingdom. For all this time it has looked out across the surrounding countryside from its hilltop position.
8. The US Embassy Tunnel
When the original US embassy tunnel in London was deemed unfit (because it was just so old), they decided to build a new one. In 2019, the Evening Standard reported that a secret tunnel was being built to provide high security power to the American Embassy.
7. Hadrian’s Villa
Hadrian's Villa, in Tivoli, Italy, is one of the most well-preserved structures from Roman times in the world. It was built as a countryside retreat for Emperor Hadrian in the second century AD, and the site was chosen because of its stunning views across the surrounding lands. While only the central structure remains, it used to have at least 30 buildings, including palaces, baths, a theatre, and libraries… all spread out over an area of around 250 hectares.
6. The Maltese Tunnels
The capital city of Malta, Valletta, is a stunningly beautiful place that’s been used as the backdrop for scenes in Gladiator, Troy, and in Game of Thrones, but beyond the aesthetics of the surface level is a secret network of underground tunnels. The reason for their existence is steeped in the city's history, as its location meant it found itself at the center of battles for centuries.
5. Secret Entrance To A Pyramid
You have to be careful where you dig, even if it's in your own backyard because you don’t know when you might hit a pipeline or cables. In Egypt rules are even stricter because with such an ancient place full of history, people will dig up their own property in the hope that they might find a valuable artifact.
4. The Umpherston Sinkhole
Sinkholes are usually a terrifying natural phenomenon, sucking down houses and whoever might be in them. They occur when flowing water underground carves out cave rock to such an extent that the top level caves in, creating a giant hole in the earth. When they open up in nature, however, they form an unusual landscape, and there’s’ one in Australia like no other.
3. Longest Ever Smuggling Tunnel
In January of 2020, US officials announced the discovery of the longest known smuggling tunnel to have ever been built on the border with Mexico. It stretched a distance of 4,309 ft (1,313m) between Tijuana in Mexico and San Diego in California. The level of sophistication in its design was unbelievable.
2. The Well To Hell
During the 70s, after losing the Space Race to reach the moon, the Soviets took on an altogether different project: by digging the deepest man made hole ever. Known as the Kola Superdeep borehole, it’s in the Pechengsky district on the Kola peninsula, and to this day retains its record.
1. The Korean Border
The border between North and South Korea is one of the most highly fortified regions on Earth. There are constant fears that hostilities might erupt again… after all, the war between the two sides was never officially ended, and only a ceasefire was signed… the real danger doesn’t necessarily come from troop movements on land.
