I realize there have been some isolated reports on the A7siii overheating in hot conditions and I'm sure it can! I'm not saying it won't ever overheat. I just think its not going to be an issue vs the R5/R6. Canon never hid the fact that these cameras are going to overheat at specific durations. So to the people that want to defend the R5/R6 you know this is a limitation when you buy it. The reality is that all cameras recording these high bitrates and frame rates are going to produce a lot of heat. And if they are passively cooled without ventilation it's going to limit record times. At the end of the day all of these cameras are going to create amazing images and the limitations are going to come down to how and where you shoot.

This is a camera that is becoming so popular right now that many beginners are getting a camera like this, which in a way will change the way filmmakers do their work in the future. For high resolution video perhaps Blackmagic’s new 12K URSA would be the way to go. The A7S3 though, wow in every way. Solid! Looking forward to seeing your content with it Lee!

I got the R5 and been testing it. Amazing video quality, but it is a very odd camera. If you only shoot video and turn it off between clips, you still can only get around 25 min of video in an hour period outside. If you shoot video clips and photos between, I was only able to get around 12 min of video total in 3 hours. I took a little over 200 photos and only used 50% of the battery in the camera.

It can get a little warm sometimes if you shoot nonstop, but still nothing like when I have shot Sony in the past. The real problem is you have to not even turn the camera on for hours to reset it. It does feel like there is a software limitation, hopefully they change that.

Nice one Lee. It's funny how we label the a7s3 as too low res for photos yet most of us deliver photos to clients less than 12mp. Well, I do! I went for the r5 as I do a lot of bird photography!

Yeah I cancelled my R6 pre-order yesterday. It's crazy to me that the R6 can overheat in every single 4K mode recorded internally. If I had to let the camera cool down for an hour or two while filming with a The A7siii does look sexy though!

I love your studio setup. The colors are creamy and you're super sharp. Nice. I preordered the camera as well, but I think something we need to prepare for is some overheating issues in certain environments. I don't think the overheating anxiety can be completely forgotten :(

Yeah, I remember the a6300/a6500 overheating. If you used a cage, dummy battery, moved the screen away from the body, removed the SD card and recorded externally, you could shoot 4K indefinitely on those cameras. I suspect that you will be able to do the same for 8K with the R5. But after you do all that, it's a more expensive, heavier, and bulkier rig. But yes, I expect that you can make it work if you like fiddling with rigging. And I just may do that when used R5s show up on ebay for half the current price. I liked this video so much I hit the thumbs up four times!
