It is good to remember that the main radial engines were underpowered as most of them were license production engines as most of the factories like Fiat and Isotta Fraschini had solid experience with in-line V-12 engines but almost out of the blue those factories had to concentrate on radial engines with little relatively experience so those companies had to ask Gnome-Rhône, probably the worst engines and Bristol to license production. The reasoning was that the bureaucracy thought that the radial engine was cheaper to produce but the real problem was that Italy supplied the Regia Aereonautica with low quality fuel and was very hard on the pistons necessitated serious continuous maintenance. Only in 1942 the factories started to make much improved prototypes but it was too late....

Talk about underpowered! Those are very long take-off runs followed by low climb rates.
I wonder how well the R.Aeronautica would have done if the MC 201 had been developed sooner. Instead of working on the MC 201Bis or waiting for the MC 202 Folgore.

It’s just weird that the Italians of all people didn’t have a decent engine!
