I know people on both sides of this and it really depends on where you are located. One person I know likes the flexibility and not being tied down so they rent, others I know like the comfort and stability of owning a home. I actually do own my home in the US and when I was buying I had the option for $0 down. It still came out cheaper to buy a home rather then rent one in my area, and my needs were for a fully detached home (wife is a private music instructor, sound travels between units too easy).

Where I live finding a place to rent where I can decorate/paint the way I want is difficult and usually more expensive. Also the monthly payment on the mortgage versus a rental contract is much lower. That's partly because home owners can get a lower interest rate on their property and then obviously the landlord needs to make money so they have to charge more than the payments of the mortgag.

Why is it that with Germans? Is it a cost thing? If you’re going to be house-poor when buying a house, then it only makes sense to rent.

I used to own property but after broken marriage and losing hope in women I don’t want to own property. I like my boat not to be anchored forever. Now I can work and live anywhere I want without worrying about property strings attached to me. I aggressively invest in stocks dividends to reduce my rent and and generate income. Probably property won’t give me such flexibility
