Gugu's death is sad but also beautiful. They don't show the scene where Gugu ends up letting go, but instead they show Fushi silent feeling the pain of his brother's death.. the music makes the scene even more beautiful.

We are often told tales of a handsome knight slaying a fire-breathing dragon to rescue a princess.
Here, we see a fire-breathing dragon sacrificing his life to try and rescue his princess.

What makes this even more sad is that fushi transformed into gugu hoping rean doesn’t know about gugus death but she knew the whole time

Gugu was a chad to the end, they would've been a great couple. But knowing the theme of the anime, the happy times are short and depressing.

-Left behind by the family he served
-Abandoned with no money by his brother
-Saves a young girl whom he’s deeply infatuated with only to have his face permanently deformed
-Destined to be called a monster for the rest of his life
-would never aspire to the goals he dreamed of
-constantly doubting himself and having severe dissonance of the purpose of his life

All for a few truly blissful moments of being found useful to his adoptive grandparents, hearing genuine remorse from his brother, having a true best friend, and knowing the girl he loves also loves him.

It’s true Gugu does not deserve the life he endured and the abrupt death he suffered, but he will always be remembered. Absolutely beautiful scene

Well...at least he was able to tell Rean he loved her and he got a kiss before he died. A better ending than everyone before him. I would've lost it entirely if neither of those happened.

GAH the storytelling and themes of this series are SO GOOD!! The emotional build up of Gugu slowly dying as his body is crushed under debris while protecting the girl he's loved and considered a friend for years. And then having Fushi desperately trying to fight the knocker all the while FEELING that his best friend is dying. And the exact moment of horror Fushi realizes he can transform INTO Gugu knowing full well what that means. It's so GOOD and it HURTS.

What makes this even sadder is that this is the first time Fushi has understood enough to be fully impacted by death.

This is the first time we as an audience get to see him react in an almost fully human way to the premature loss of a loved one.
