On his show, Phil Donahue never shied away from questioning those in power, be they government officials or corporate CEOs. And there was no more frequent guest on his program than Ralph Nader. Along with guests Joan Claybrook, Michael Jacobson and Jeff Cohen, we pay tribute to a man Ralph calls “the greatest enabler and defender of the First Amendment right of free speech in American history.”

I loved Phil Donahue and his show. It was always interesting. He was so respectful to everyone on his show, let people talk without interruption. It was great. He was a treasure and so are you, Mr Nader.

I grew up with Phil Donahue and Ralph Nader. I'm concerned about who the children of today will grow up with...

This type of uncensored discourse is forbidden now in the fascist nightmare we live in. I miss the uncensored days.

I still remember Ralph Nader saying "on the air", (discussing male "a little smegma never hurt anybody". I was shocked when it happened, laughed many times about it since it happened. Ralph Nader and Phil Donohue could fill the best 60 minutes ever.

My hero Ralph and Phil tried their best to tame the greedy corporate beast, and no one since has been better at it.

I was 11 years old when I first heard of Nader. I was a huge fan as a teenager and young adult. As life, goes on and fast forward 20 years… I’m 35 now and it melts my heart to see Nader is still fighting the good fight.

I loved the Phil Donahue show. When his passing was covered on DemocracyNow, I wrote the following comment on the video:

R.I.P. Phil. I’ve sorely missed your show, and because of my own job, I wasn’t able to watch it nearly enough. I can remember one episode in particular in which your guest was Jerry Falwell and a member of your audience asked whether the Bible doesn’t say that we’re to love our enemies; and Falwell replied: “I love the [Russians]. I just don’t trust them.” Because the young man was apparently not familiar enough with his Text, he was stumped and I never wished so hard that I could’ve been there. If I HAD been, I’d have said that the Bible doesn’t say that we should trust them. It says: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 (KJV) There came a time many years later when he (Falwell) visited the city where I lived, and I was able to stand in a ‘meet and greet’ line and shake his hand. When it was my turn to shake hands, I took the opportunity to relate the incident, and wouldn’t release his hand until I had finished. When I got to the part where I told him what he had said, he and his entourage got a big kick out of it and that’s when he tried to let go of my hand; but I held on tight and finished the story. When he heard what I would’ve said, he, and everyone else stopped laughing and became quite somber. He had no response, but it was thanks to you, Phil, who I’ll always remember. I know you’re in GOOD company. Thank you 🙏🏽 ❤

The best memory is of Phil Donahue meeting Marlo Thomas on his show and marrying her. No doubt they had the right chemistry to bring them together. You deserved that suit, Ralph!

It's hard to believe that the "Dynamo" is gone. First time I ever saw the Phil Donahue show I was mesmerized. Phil looked like he was in the driver's seat of a hurricane, because there was so much going on at once.

I am seeing his white hair bouncing back in place as he ran up and down aisles to reach the next audience member for comments. Never condescending as we hear today forever respectful to live callers as well.
He set the standard for the common sense of corporate (facistic) resistance and manners for 2 generations.
