What do you think of the Jailbreak Mode?
Today, we look back at the origins of a community-made CS mod that became one of the most popular gamemodes in the community, jailbreak.
I've spent a bit trying to gather information, searching the internet far and wide to get all of this old stuff. Thankfully, most of it was archived, but I'm sure there is some info out there I am missing.

Ah, nostalgia. Jailbreak was one of my favourite game modes. It made me join a clan with long friendships and got me interested in mapping.

I ported many source maps to global offensive and made a few of my own. Making minigames was fun, but I loved adding secrets.

My favourite secret was an armoury that would push players away unless someone crouched on a specific seat. Not many people knew how to activate it, so when I joined the server, I would open it to the amazement of others.

Thanks for making a video on the history on this! Used to play CSS heavily 2008–2011. Peak Zombie Mod, Mini Games, and Jailbreak years. Jailbreak always felt like a late night talk show type of game. Always was funny and super social; like the divebar version of all the three mods.

escape would be better if there were 2 different escape zones to prevent camping, and cts had less money

I like how we had all these interesting game modes but in the end all the players could think off was 24/7 dust 2. Life with NPC's is so fun.

I used to play the zombie mode so much when i was young in CSS. zm_lilpanic was such a banger map. I remember everyone racing to that tiny room in the basement of the map. Everyone would have a M249 and shooting that pop machine against the door so the zombies couldn't get in. There was also a tiny little crawl space where you would put two players on each end. Good times.

Really liked the video! Maybe could've been a little bit more in-depth given the title of the video (probably would've been better to call it "The Origins" instead of "The History", as that's what most of the video is covering) but it was still good! Very simple and to the point

man seeing the spy v spy jb map at the end brings me back. I used to be only play csgo for jailbreak in 2014 when i was a kid. I remember when the arms deal update came out it ruined the "credit" system that would give you rewards like trails and "skins" (the skin would just "tint?" the gun like purple or orange) and you were such a baller back then if you saved enough credits from playing for them. I didn't even know match making or ranks were a thing until the bravo update. And even then I only played competitive to make my aim better for fighting on jailbreak! :)

As a Turkish guy who even owned a jailbreak server in the past this video was mind-blowing. I didn't know jailbreak was mostly popular in Turkey, I think the main reason is it being so popular among streamers and youtubers in the past.

Thanks so much for making this video. Even though it was rather brief, I appreciate this trying to recognize the game mode I loved so much back then. Electric razor was definitely a classic map that I remember playing on. It had a lot of other spinoffs and improved versions too.

On the Turkish side of things, this thing was especially huge with 1.6 during mid-late 2000s. The most popular map (with its countless variations) goes by the name jail_buyukisyan or jb_buyukisyan but it usually is something like that. Buyukisyan roughly means "bigrebellion" but i guess it's more like "bigprisonbreak". It's always been one of the most popular ways to play the game for us Turks and it still is, for some reason.

I loved Jailbreak in 1.6, even if, as a French, the french servers were a looot different from other countries.
Both were lot of fun !

I ran a css gaming community last year in 2021 where we had a jailbreak server which hit 30/30 player every night from October 2021 to January 2022, community was called “NLG”. Only shut it down due to being busy. Before that there was Gamepunch, before that there was EGN. Right now the only populated server is JBX. There’s also hell clan which is a very populated UK server.

gamebanana was called CSBANANA before it expanded to multiple games and rebranded as FPSBANANA (I wanna say this happened in like 2006/2007? can confirm w/ the waybackmachine)
