The leopard tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis) is a species of tortoise native to the savannas of eastern and southern Africa. It is the fourth largest species of tortoise in the world, with adults typically reaching lengths of 18-24 inches and weights of 40-80 pounds.

The leopard tortoise gets its name from the distinctive pattern of black and yellow spots on its shell, which resemble the spots on a leopard's coat. The shell is also highly domed and has a serrated edge, which helps to protect the tortoise from predators.

Leopard tortoises are herbivorous and feed primarily on grasses, although they will also eat some fruits and vegetables. They are known for their long lifespan, with some individuals living for more than 50 years in captivity.

Due to habitat loss and the pet trade, the leopard tortoise is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
