Is Upgrading Tesla Model S to MCU2 Computer Worth It? FSD Install too!

Our AP2.0 & MCU1 Tesla Model S finally came up for the FSD install. so we decided to get the new MCU2 upgrade at the same time. However the MCU2 is a $2,500 upgrade. Is it worth $2,500? How about compared to buying a new Model S instead? What would you do?

Yes, I have a 2017 Model S 100D and will be updating my MCU and FSD computer as well. Currently scheduled for later this months. I think it’s well worth the $2500 as well; the upgrade to MCU2, along with the new FSD computer, will make it a good trade-in or resale feature. Looking forward to hear about the cameras. Thank you guys for your hard work on the channel. Questions: 1. How long was the install? Please confirm what did they swap exactly, MCU2 (including screen) and AP3 (aka FSD computer), anything else? I would like to make sure I know what to look for when discussing with Tesla Service.

I own a 2017 Model S 100D as well. I got the same upgrades about three weeks ago and wholeheartedly agree that it is worth doing. I highly recommend it.

Just picked up my 17 after upgrading MCU and HW3. Great upgrade and as you said it’s better than trading in and giving up another 30k.

I decided not to do the MCU upgrade in my 2016 AP1 at least until there are more radio apps available. Even then I’m not sure I want to drive on CA Hiway 1 without Internet access or a tuner.

One thing I can’t quite relate to is your desire to keep the sunroof. Not only do I hardly ever open mine, the wind noise drives me nuts! The glass panels and other pieces are not properly aligned, so it looks like a hack job. And Tesla doesn’t want to do anything about it.

Yes, I have a 2017 S90D FSD since new. Been patiently waiting for upgrade. Local Tesla has scheduled and rescheduled upgrade 3 times due to lack of parts. Supposed to be done Friday. Tesla service seems to be lacking in this area.

2017 Model X 100D AP2 owner. Paid for FSD about a year ago before price went up (paid $3000). Awaiting Tesla notification but have heard that you can request FSD upgrade on app. Definitely getting MCU2 upgrade after watching this video. Thanks for doing this and I can't wait to get mine!

I just became the proud owner of a 2017 HW2/MCU1 Model X (traded in my Model 3). Amazingly, the Cincinnati service center went ahead and installed HW3 on my X before I picked it up last week. Shout out to Cincy for the proactive service! I have an appointment to have my MCU upgraded this Friday. With this upgrade to MCU 2, I honestly feel like I’m going to be driving a brand new Model X. The only thing I’m bummed about is losing FM radio; not so much for me, but for my wife. She REALLY loves our local NPR affiliate. Could you possibly do a short video soon regarding workarounds for the loss of FM? Thanks guys; love the channel.
