How to Communicate with Europa featuring Dr. Robert Romanofsky of NASA

Magneto-Inductive Communications for Ocean Worlds, is a new concept from Dr. Robert Romanofsky of NASA.

A mission to the under-ice ocean of Europa is one of the highest priority missions for NASA. Dr. Romanofsky's concept is for a probe to melt through the 5 to 10 km thickness of briny ice to reach the buried ocean below. The challenge of communicating back to the surface of Europa is also directly addressed.

I had honestly never even thought about how we'd do that and it's amazing to know there's a solution in the works.

14:55 "its a lot more difficult than people realise"
In my head it was next to impossble and this quick interview has made it sound way easier and plausible than i imagined. I hope it is as "easy" as described, and that the ice is as thin as just a few klicks

I needed this right now. I’ve been watching too much anxiety-inducing election coverage. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Shame on me!

I kept watching til the very last second because the hypnotizing beautiful ending credits music.
But this one of the best science interviews I've heard in a long time

You always ask great questions, John! Thanks for yet another insightful interview. Europa reminds me of snowball Earth early in its history. Who know what we'll find!

Can't wait, I've been complaining that we needed this mission for like 2 decades now. Lol

As much as i like the longer episodes, i dont mind a quick and to the point update on a subject like this. Good conversation. :D

I've thought a little bit about this, and I wondered if the rover could drag down a tether with a receiver on the end, then detach from the receiver/tether once it breaks through the ice. Then I realized that the hole could refreeze around the tether. So I thought maybe the tether could be heated enough to ensure it doesn't get trapped. But you couldn't heat up sections of the tether as they came unrolled, so the center of the spool would get pretty damn hot and most likely damage the tether. Not to mention all the juice that heating several kilometers of tether would take up.
So in other words, I'm glad that people like Dr. Romanofsky are working on this problem

Interesting solution to burrowing through the ice and sending whatever info is received. Let’s hope this mission is undertaken at some point.
