GCC-US Summit begins
The US-GCC Summit has begun. Leaders plan to talk about co-operation in the fight against Daesh and Iran’s impact in the region. US President Barack Obama arrived in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Wednesday, where he met Saudi King Salman. Obama has suggested that Saudi Arabia and Iran ‘share the neighbourhood.’ But Riyadh has accused the US of shifting its policy towards Iran after world powers reached a deal with Tehran to curb its nuclear programme last July.
Asylum seekers change route
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says that fewer asylum seekers are crossing the Aegean from Turkey into Europe. The number decreased after the deal between Ankara and the EU to try to solve the refugee crisis went into effect earlier this month. Meanwhile, traffic on the Mediterranean route between Libya and Italy has increased. Last week, the Italian Coast guard says it rescued six thousand people off the coast of Sicily. Hundreds of others have drowned.
Tax hikes to pay for earthquake rebuilding
President Rafael Correa says Ecuador will implement new economic measures to help pay for reconstruction after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake this weekend. These include temporarily raising taxes and possibly issuing more international bonds. Correa says rebuilding could cost between two and three billion dollars. Nearly 600 people died in the quake and 4,000 were injured. Thousands have been left homeless.
Rousseff takes impeachment battle to UN
President Dilma Rousseff plans to attend a UN event on climate change as a way to fight against her impeachment. Her aides say she’d use the interviews to defend herself. Rousseff had initially cancelled her visit after the lower house of congress voted in favour of impeaching her. She’s accused of manipulating government accounts She denies any wrongdoing.The matter will now be sent to the Senate.
