If you just really enjoy circuit style ab routines then go for it.

But in terms of practical results they’re generally a poor use of time and effort.

You’re essentially doing a mix between a brief cardio session that doesn’t burn very many calories... and a muscle building workout that doesn’t stimulate hypertrophy nearly as effectively as other alternatives.

Having a “six pack” is primarily just an issue of maintaining low enough body fat levels, and that is achieved through a calorie deficit (which is mainly driven through your diet).

You can’t “spot reduce” fat by performing abdominal exercises.

From an aesthetics standpoint, the only purpose for direct ab training is to build the actual abdominal muscles to get them popping out a bit more noticeably.

(Not everyone needs to do direct ab training, but you can depending on your goals and preferences.)

You don’t train your chest by pumping out 5 different light weight/high rep exercises back to back for 12 minutes, so why would you train your abs that way?

It makes no sense.

Just train your abs in the same basic way as you’d train any other muscle group.

Select exercises where you can get within a few reps of failure (kneeling rope crunches are my personal favorite), take a proper rest period between sets, and progressively overload in some fashion over time.

“Ab workouts” are great for social media clicks because they can be done from anywhere and everyone wants to “lose belly fat” and “get a six pack”…

But if most people really understood how little these workouts are actually doing for them then they probably wouldn’t bother.

If you're trying to ONLY get a visible six pack then I 100% agree with you. However there's lots of benefits to core training

Those core aren’t really a waste. They fixed my hip and back pain I was having. Those core workouts reset and realigned whatever was out of wack and n my body. I do them once a week

I've just been doing crunches the past few months and I can see the top four abs. It's pretty exciting. I've never had visible abs before.

I appreciate the “if you want a visible six pack” so many people just say that the exercises are pointless but no like anything core work is very important it’s just not what’s going to make them aesthetic

You can grow abs with simple bodyweight exercises, people just don't understand the logic behind muscle hypertrophy and for that reason they perform poorly controlled high-rep movements. It's the same with pushups: you can do 100 reps as a cardio exercise or 4-6 sets of 8-24 reps for bodybuilding. Muscle-mind connection, duration of muscular tension and things like that

Guys if u just want a strong core(six pack invisible without a low body fat percentage) then just keep doing those ab workouts. A strong core is helpful in all sports no matter if it is visible or not.

Ima still do them crunches bro, i personally totally neglect core exercises and overall body weight exercises so im tryna get these muscle groups more active and just do more with more consistency.

Man... I remember when your videos were just you with a whiteboard and showing good workouts and form. You've come a long ways since I started watching your stuff.

This is exactly it. I’ve watched Sean’s videos for over a year now and have seen insane muscle progression since I got back In The gym. He knows the quickest and most efficient ways of building muscle, with no BS! Those high rep body weight exercises are simply cardio, and for me if I’m wanting to do cardio I’ll go for a run, not waste my time with these exercises.
