How to Use a Laptop Screen as an External Monitor [Tutorial]

Using an extra monitor for work is a fantastic productivity boost—no more split-screen action between Microsoft Word and Chrome. No more having to prioritize which window goes on top. A multi-monitor setup also looks cool, plus you can use the extra screen as a media display when not in use.

If you don't have an extra monitor but have an extra laptop, you can repurpose the laptop as a sort of second screen. Here's how you can use your laptop as an external monitor!

Adding a second monitor to your workstation is an excellent way to expand your productivity, and while the best computer monitors are great for this, you can use your laptop as a second display, too. This is pretty useful, as you can save some money by using a laptop that you already own instead of buying a brand-new external monitor to use. You'll be able to do this as long as both your main PC and your laptop support wireless Miracast connectivity.

With so many people now working from home, you may well need two screens to be more productive. You don't have to rush out and buy a new monitor, though. If you have a working laptop running Windows 10 it's possible to hook it up to your PC, or another laptop so it acts as an extra display.

Working from home? If you need a second screen, you can use a spare laptop running Windows 10 and turn it into an extra monitor for more space for apps. Here's how to do it.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Alienware, Razer, MSI, Huawei , Microsoft Surface, and Samsung.

I think you left several steps out. "Once you have your laptop hooked up or connected to your desktop". Seems like you're not too good are remote support. The physical or electronic connection is a pretty important component, I would say.

Hi. When I have the laptop set up as a second monitor, can I then load that laptop screen into OBS on the laptop? My PC is a bit laggy while gaming and streaming, causing stuttering graphics. Maybe I can do the streaming on the laptop instead as it displays the monitor from the PC? Thanks.

I’m using a USB-C to HMDI adaptor from my laptop to 165Hz monitor. The connection works fine, however the display on the laptop is way laggier and the fps is nowhere compared to the fps displayed on the laptop. I have tried using different resolutions but nothing seems to be working. Any advice?

I have a Product from J5 Create. It is a USB-C to 4K HDMI Adapter (JCA153G). I plugged the HDMI plug of my PS5 into the HDMI ‘female connector’ of the J5 product, and the USB-C into my laptop yet I was not able to use my laptop as a second screen to utilize my PS5. Could I get help on that?
