My name is GUY APOLLO. I was the teen talent winner on the show. I auditioned for Danny Thomas and George Schlatter once I was a finalist. Danny personally picked this song for me to do because he liked the fact I could sing in Italian. This was a big moment for me. I was 19 and had just moved to L.A. 9 months earlier. From this show, I was offered a recording contract with ABC PARAMOUNT RECORDS and recorded "They Can't Make Her Cry" from "CAT BALLOU" with FRANK DeVOL. I later was on tour with the SHINDIG '65 ROAD SHOW for 6 months ! It was a wonderful time in my life. I will always be greatful for Danny for giving me my first break.

This is why I love YouTube. I absolutely love these old variety shows. I was alive when this was on, but I was an infant. This features a lot of people who actually worked for Danny Thomas, at this time. Mary Tyler Moore, Andy Griffith, and Carl Reiner, who worked with Danny Thomas in the writing, producing and production company ownership side of of the Dick Van Dyke Show. Plus the mad genius of Mel Brooks. Plus, watch for a few surprise cameos.
It's fun to see Mary in color, at the time of the Dick Van Dyke Show. She is featured quite a bit, on this show.
Still relatively new at the time, this is color videotape.

That opening number was an showy bit of tape editing back when videotape had to be cut with a razor and tape. Impressive.

When Danny Thomas says to Mary Tyler Moore, I think she’s adorable and very talented. Young lady i bet James, l, Brooks, and Allan Burns thought the same exact thing, when they created the Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970 5 years after this special

The talent winner was a handsome kid. Great voice. I saw him on the"Shindig" tour. He performed with the RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS, DICK and DEE DEE, GARY LEWIS and THE PLAYBOYS, PAUL PETERSEN, THE HONEYS, AND CANNIBAL AND THE HEAD HUNTERS. It was a great show ! He had a couple of great records called "THE VICTIM", "MY WORLD IS YOU" and "BIG MAN IN TOWN" back in '66 or '67.

Judy Garland’s show was cancelled in 1964 after one season. Would have loved to see her show last longer and go into color like this!

Do you have a good copy of the Danny Thomas Special--What Makes People Laugh-with The Three Stooges and Martha Raye from November 1965? Did George Schlatter produce that one too?

Hi there! Thanks for sharing this special. I know this is a huge request, but I’m wondering if there’s any way you could get “The Danny Thomas Reunion Special, ” also, from 1965, which featured Perry Como and cast members from his sitcom. Thanks in advance! 🤞🏽🥳

It looks like Mary Tyler Moore had her lucky bracelet as early as 1965

I have heard that story about Mary Tyler Moore not getting the part of his daughter on the Danny Thomas Show because of her nose, but the actress who played his wife didn't have a large nose and neither did the two actresses who played his daughter. The explanation would be that they inherited their mother's nose, not their father's. So Mary could have played his daughter. I wonder if Danny made up that story just to be funny. Marlo Thomas did inherit her father's nose, but she had rhinoplasty. That's what a nose job is called. There was a comedian who made a joke about that, but I can't remember who it was.
