Emma, I need advice. So basically I won’t share my age but I’m in middle school and I have this friend group trio.(There used to be 6 girls in this friend group but they went to different middle schools.) It worked well until about a year ago. One girl (let’s call her Cupcake) has done competitive dance for years. Cupcake loves dance but it has never been a problem because it’s just her sport and she talks about it mainly with our other friend who does dance. As we get older, Cupcake starts talking about dance more and more, but we don’t mind (yet). I have done soccer since I was 2 (almost 3) and I now play travel soccer. The other girl in the trio (let’s call her Pancake) also plays soccer.
She’s not as into it as me though so we don’t talk about it very much. So about a year ago Pancake decided to quit soccer and start dancing. At the same studio as Cupcake. Pancake had to start in the beginners class, but this year she’s on the competition team with Cupcake. Even though Cupcake has always talked about dance, they now talk about it all the time and it bothers me. They see each other multiple times a week and have nearly no time for me. I started feeling really left out. I let them know how I feel about them talking about dance. They said “Ok! We won’t talk about it as much around you.” But it didn’t get better. One time we were at the mall and they kept whispering things to each other. I was having no fun, but I kept a smile on my face. I casually said, ”What are you guys whispering about?” They said, ”We know you don’t like dance so we are whispering about it instead of talking so you don’t have to hear”💀 Now let’s talk about the present. They have nicknames for each other, but none for me. They talk about sleepovers and hangouts that I wasn’t invited to right in front of me. They talk about dance all. the. time. I know some competitive dancers reading this are gonna be annoyed but please hear me out. I’m not saying it’s not a real sport. I love sports. Just please don’t make them your whole personality. You love it so much! I’m happy for you. You’re interested in it. Good for you! But that’s your whole life, your only interest, all you talk about…? Then no, I’m not gonna love it all the time. Pancake and Cupcake practice dance whenever we get to go outside for a class or when we have extra time in gym. They talk about nationals and their new solo and I am genuinely happy for them. But when I talk about soccer practice, game, tournament, a goal I scored, a medal I won they don’t listen and start a new conversation. I really do like them when they aren’t talking about dance so what do I do Emma? Please help❤
