The Voynich manuscript is one of the most mysterious codices in the world. No oneโs been able to figure out what it means, who wrote it, or why it was written. Many scientists, statisticians, linguists, and cryptographers have studied the codex but none have been able to decipher it.
In 1912, a Polish bookseller, Wilfrid Voynich came across the codex in Italy. He purchased it and brought it to US. The Voynich manuscript looks like a small book. It has consists 240 pages, although some pages are missing, and written is on calfskin called vellum. It contains colored illustrations of plants, none of them clearly identifiable, stars, mythical characters, and what appear to be words but that make no sense.
Researchers have examined its ink, paint, parchment, covers, binding, and letters. Analysis by such techniques as radiocarbon dating, protein tests, multispectral tests, and X-ray diffraction, reveal that the codex was written in the 1400s, probably between 1404 and 1438). The parchment is made from calfskin and the letters were written with a quill and iron gall ink.
The codex consists of over 170,000 characters arranged into about 35,000 words. Its language seems to follow certain grammatical rules. For instance, vowels appear in every word; some of them never follow others, while others may be doubled or tripled. But the distribution of letters is peculiar. Some characters occur only at the beginning of a word, some only at the end, and some only in the middle of word.
Years of study have led to various ideas about what the Voynich manuscript might be. Some researchers have claimed that itโs encrypted. Also some of the illustrations suggest a connection with alchemy. That would explain the encryption, because alchemists were keen to protect the secrets of their research.
According to another theory, the text of the manuscript consists of meaningless words that hide meaningful information using a technique called stenography. As an example of this, a German spy sent this message during WWII: โApparently neutral's protest is thoroughly discounted and ignored. Isman hard hit. Blockade issue affects pretext for embargo on byproducts, ejecting suets and vegetable oils.โ If we consider only the second letter of every word the hidden message is revealed: โPershing sails from NY June 1โ. If the codex does contain hidden information, it would be hard to prove or disprove since we know nothing about the language in which itโs written.
Some researchers have suggested that the manuscript is written in a poorly understood natural language, such as a Northern Germanic dialect or Aztec. Others said have the manuscript may be based on a constructed language like the Klingon language in Star Trek or the Elvish language in The Lord of the Rings.
Some researchers have concluded that the manuscript is purely a hoax: a fake publication, written in gibberish, just to make money from book buyers.
So what really is the Voynich manuscript? Is it a cipher, an unknown language, an encyclopedia for pharmacology and medicine, a message from aliens? The simple answer is: we donโt know and thatโs why this strange collection of pictures and enigmatic words continues to attract attention.
