9-Year-Old Boy Learns To Shoot A Free Throw In 6 Months (Time Lapse)

In February of this year I had my son shoot his first unassisted basket on a full-size rim, so he could learn how to play basketball. He wants to spend most of his free time gaming, and I would like to encourage him to be more athletic. I am not forcing him to become the next Michael Jordan. I would just like for him to become more physically active, so he can be a stronger and healthier person.

After about 40 attempts he made his first unassisted basket that day. That success, boosted his self esteem, he started to behave better in school, and his grades improved. For every weekend thereafter (when the weather was good enough to take him outdoors) we wouldn't leave the park until he made one basket. Throughout this summer, we have been going to the park 4 to 6 times each week. So I have taken the extra time to show him to shoot from farther distances from the basket while using better form.

Yesterday, after 6 months and hundreds of attempts my 9-year-old son who doesn't play a lot of sports made his first basket from free-throw range.

This is constructive parenting in its best form. A loving push to excel and help your child understand they are capable of anything they set their minds to and work hard for. Wish I had lessons like this growing up, would have helped in so many aspects of life. Great video.

This is awesome man. Your son has some serious discipline and determination for his age. As he gets better he will learn to love the sport too, you may very well have the next MJ on your hands.

Nice, keep up the hard work little man. Some good parenting right there, kids need to be pushed and learn to work through failure.

Great job man. I'm about to start my first year as a college basketball player and I really wish I had someone push me to start this early.

it would really help him to play with a smaller ball if this is something he really enjoys doing and wants to continue to do. possibly a smaller a rim aswell if possible. it will really help him with his form and learning a proper technique to shoot.
