This video was originally a rush release due to questions I was getting from Instagram.
Thanks for watching!

Chris, after many tries and many retrofits I finally got a system that works. I enclosed my 12” Mitre Saw with a housing I made that allows my compound mitre saw to swing all the way 50 degrees left and right. My saw has two long pipes that allows the mitre saw to slide back and forth. The foot print is large. After all the trial and errors I decided the answer was gravity! I tore the Mitre Saw out but left the surround in place with an alteration. I drilled a 4.5” hole in the bench under where the Mitre Saw sits. Then I cut pieces of 1/4” hard boards into triangular shapes. These triangular pieces were then secured to surround that was first built but kicked the bottom of these pieces forward towards the hole in the bench. I then fastened a cover using heavy stock card board over the triangular hardboard pieces to cover everything. This enclosure came out just behind the fence. I installed a PVC 4” coupling to the hole in the bench and connected the coupling with a 4” flexible dust collection hose. I originally bought plastic dust blast gates from a well known woodworking supply store. These blast gates turned out to be real junk. They clogged up with saw dust and leaked vacuum until they were totally useless. I built my own blast gates that are self cleaning and never get clogged up. Now every saw or piece of equipment that needs centralized vacuum works at full capacity. My Mitre Saw never worked so good. I have two vacuum hoses connected to my Mitre Saw. One that draws the dust from the rear of the Mitre Saw and of course the new and much improved gravity pulled saw dust behind the Mitre Saw.

I always love simple ingenious solutions to problems. This solution most certainly falls into that category. Thanks for this great pro tip.

I was going back through looking for my comments and realized this is now probably my favorite tip of yours. I also have a Dewalt and they are horrible at dust collection. The options to solve this are limited for sure, and I definitely want to try this.

I replicated your design on a similar Dewalt and it captures essentially 99%! Thanks for making your awesome design open source.

You are so correct about those DeWalts be dust monsters, I’ll be giving that a try. Thanks

Nice job. As a mechanical engineer and product designer you did a great job. One suggestion for getting better raw material is to use McMaster Carr. They have lots of industrial products and have an excellent web site. I am going to make this using neoprene with a medium durometer as it is fairly inexpensive and durable. Urethane would be even better but it is much more costly. That will keep it from flipping up yet still be flexible. Keep up the good work.

This is the kind of solution I was looking for, thanks for sharing.

I think your solution is far superior to the others I've seen; you collect dust right at the blade, enable mitering and beveling, and have one of the simplest and cheapest methods. I've attempted something similar with the exact same saw, but using more rigid materials in my mod which unfortunately maintained a significant open gap between the stock dust extraction tube and my funnel-like modifications; that large gap made my attempts a failure. I'll be purchasing shelf liner and replicating your work this weekend. The only difference is I have a 1250 CFM dust collector so I might be able to forego the wire stiffeners.

Thank you for this video. I will add this to my saw which makes an insane amount of dust.

I just bought the Dewalt DWS 799 Miter Saw, and the dust chute/guide is different. The problem I was having is when I attached my dust collection the suction was too strong and collapse the thin rubber chute/guide closed. My solution was to take the dust port and tube out and wrap the thin rubber chute with Gorilla black tape. This really reinforce it and when hooked up to the 2HP Dust collection the chute did not collapse shut anymore. In addition I added a chute extension like you did with rubber liner and that made it perfect. Thanks for the idea.

This looks like a really good solution. I am needing something for my miter saw and didn't want a big and bulky box around it. I will give this a try.

I don’t really use my miter Saw much but this gave me an idea how to enclose the back of my old belt driven craftsman tablesaw so that I can attempt to put dust collection on the beast

Hey Chris Nice design I made one using the top of large windex refill bottle( the big one you get at Cosco ) its kind of rectangular and still I glued a peice of drawer liner to the front of the bottle (after i cut it to size and the used two small sheet metal screws and more ca glue to attach it to the dust collection tube - works great and swivels w the saw

Great video. I am going to try it on my old 10" Makita. I should almost get a new saw, but I get attached to my tools like my vehicles. I built 4 houses with that saw, and I feel like I am turning my back on an old friend if I was to get rid of it. Cheers.
