I just had another theory, remember in season 2, in the last episode when Dustin thought he saw something in the tunnels before gettng like poisened by a plant... We never understood what he really saw and it could be in my opinion, something more than just a little distraction for this thrilling moment. We do know that the Duffer's really puts clues everywhere and that time travell, in any shape of form is kinda point out in the leaked picture nor the official. So, imagine if the kids from season 5 find a way to travel in time via the upside down. we know the upside down is tuck in time, got like some time power, so imagine if the kids goes back in time in the tunnels to go somewhere in 1984, season 2 year and that the thing that the younger Dustin from 84 kinda saw in the tunnels were his friend and himself from the future ! It could be an amazing scene that the Duffer has planned all along and what a way to understand the season 3 and his importance teased by the writers |

The tunnels are definitely gonna be a lifeline. I kinda think Will has to close the upsidedown from the inside. I can imagine El closing from the outside and Will from the inside. Idk maybe Will could turn it into something amazing, idk I have a feeling Will is the true ruler of the upsidedown...

They said this would be the "Return of the Jedi" Season as last season was "Empire Strikes Back." This could be referencing Han/Max (in carbonite/coma). It could also be referencing the crew immediately getting a victory only to find out later it's not a real victory. Like maybe Will uses the Mind Flayer's power to help the crew end Vecna (Because he was always just the Mind Flayer's General as Dustin pointed out in season 4. Then they all think, yay, Vecna's gone, but Will (Swapping between memories of his time in the upside down and the time jump to Christmas, their senior year), will become the threat once again. The actor who plays Lucas described one of the previous seasons as "season of the traitor, " but it wasn't season 2, so...why did he say that unless he had some inkling that someone among them that season was only playing a pretend role. Perhaps the Mind Flayer temporarily left Will in control (I still feel him, he wont stop [actually referring to mind flayer and not Vecna]) to make it seem like he wasn't a threat until Vecna is out of the way and quits messing with the Mind Flayer's plans. Then episode 2 or 3 when Vecna dies and the time jump happens, BOOM! A whole lot of death. when Will yells at Steve to run, it may be because he feels the Mind Flayer taking over his body to destroy Vecna and he doesn't want Steve to suffer also.

They’re gonna use the tunnels to find some type of signal, driving Steve’s car through them . Will’s connection as the spy is probably gonna return in some way. Also, The Mind Flayer is the Big Bad, Henry as a child was infected by its influence.
