Nice video, thanks. The wheels will definitely shear at the wheel side joints. If you look at the double wishbone suspension the inboard side of the arms are much thicker/wider and have a greater mass than the outboard wheel sides. This is very similar to formula 1 race car suspension. It's designed to fail that way to absorb crash energy and keep the wheel away from the occupant. Remember they used Roush Engineering to redesign/design the suspension and those folks know racing and safety.

I think the EVA foam is able to be molded with a shiny skin on the outside. Think about those promotional beer cozies they sell that are soft foam on the inside, but have a smoother surface on the skin. I don't think it needs to be painted. Agreed on the picture of the lens on the wheel skirt. It looks like a jewel.

Honestly I like the look of foam. I'd like to go even further and have a wrap that looks like the foam thermal tiles on the space shuttle and other space planes, preferably a little browned and scarred like I just came down from space. It looks so much like a spaceship, especially similar to lifting body re-entry vehicles, so I think it really fits.

EVA can be created in many colors. It is a closed cell foam that has very micro bubbles and has high shock absorption qualities. If you got hit and it left an indentation you could try heating the area with a hair dryer. That might cause the foam to expand to its original shape. It is possible they did some type of heating to the surface or maybe a molding treatment with a very smooth finish. I believe the rear area foam extends another foot or so under the body towards the rear tire under the cover.
It's been 30 years since I worked with it. Very hard to get anything to freeze to it and it remains flexible in cold temperatures. But I have not seen it at 40 degrees below. Thin strips of it super glued to ski goggles provided a hypoallergenic and much smoother surface for skin than any other foams made back then. The super glue caused the two different foams to bond chemically. You basically had to let that sit out over night in a well ventilated area. I did find that the glue used by velcro could stick to a die cut surface of eva very well and stay on in the worst of conditions. It is very durable foam. I have pieces of it from 30 years ago that are still as good today as the day they were die cut from a 1/2" 4'X8' sheet. I think I remember seeing some screen printed logos on some.

The "bumpers" are probably foam under plastic.
Good overview, Thanks!

I think the foam is not painted, but probably some kind of vinyl or plastic layer.

Because Sandy Munro has attached his name to this project, I expect nothing less than first rate fit and finish on everything!

Agreed. The bit I am most interested in is the solar panels and how they look. Up until now I think we have only been looking at stickers or the panels as a standalone unit.

I hope it’ll do good on rough roads because I’m planning on taking it across the country and there is a lot of driveways that are steep there’s a lot of driveways that have deep holes and the pavement is not all in the best shape road construction 🚧 and it looks like these wheel covers are awful low. I hope I don’t damage it on Real road Trips

Yeah the reason it doesn't have conventional bumpers is because legally motorcycles don't need them. It still has crumple zones for personal safety, but unless legally required, bumpers do limit the efficiency of the aerodynamics and of course limits your designs.

I see Amber lighting from the side and this angle. Red from the rear (split lighting). Coated foam for the "bumpers". Replaceable sections like a fender on a typical car yes. Cost like a full fender also.

I would think that the shear of the front wheel that you’re referring to would have so much mechanical advantage pivoting towards the inside of the swingarm that damage to the body would happen before the wheel would shear off.

The lights are required by law on the extremities so otherwise if you’re driving at night when someone comes by they won’t say that just didn’t see you and knock it off. There is still a lot of folks nationwide who never have seen it

The teaser pics are inspiring. I was hoping that the fender lighting first seen in the Beta, with the clear bezel over the colored LED lights, would make it that way into production, and that appears to be the case so far shown in the Gamma model. I do think that we are seeing a smooth, semi-gloss, plastic coating (not paint) on the foam. I agree that it looks more finished and upscale than the uncoated EVA foam. I am not too worried about how the Aptera will act in a crash. I am however excited thinking about how it will drive normally, and on a nice, winding road. 😁

Closed-cell EVA can have a satin finish like the soles of shoes or the top of a bodyboard. I'm not sure how well paint would adhere to EVA foam. That orange strip looks fantastic btw.

I would also like to see brake and backup lights in the light bar at the back of the wheel cover and a small projector head light at the front. Could be made without changing aerodynamics and would make the car more distinctive and safe.

Great run down of front and rear and the shearing of the front wheel so i guess like in formula one the wheel is tethered to body.

Feels Aptera is getting closer, 🌱💧⛅🌦 helped by CA fund grant 🌬☀

Wonder if Aptera is safer from head on collision, seems agile to handle curves. Good for mountain switchback.

Envision one day it could only benefit if had wheels that can rotate 90°
-like cruise ship pods to move sideways

I agree, the fit and finish looks great. I’m wondering if the yellow/amber parts will blink with the turn signal.

i think you might have got it wrong. The back angle is orange in colour since it is supposed to act like reflectors. Especially for the night since the wheels are jutting out from the main body of the car.
