How To Create More Energy for BJJ Training Consistently

In today's video I answer a question about energy levels for BJJ training. It comes from a 3 stripe Blue Belt who says that their energy levels are all over the place. Sometimes they feel great for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and rolling and then other times they feel ultra lethargic. The same thing happens with lifting where their energy levels and strength is all over the place.

In this video I share an important idea that more Jiu-jitsu practitioners should pay attention to which is focus on your diet and take note of what's making you feel better. And the best way to do this is to make your diet super consistent. Eat the same / similar foods everyday. While it takes discipline and may be kind of boring the results are helpful whether you're trying to lose weight, gain weight or improve your energy levels.

The reason is if you're eating the same foods all the time then if you feel bad you can see how your diet has changed and make adjustments. Whereas if your diet is all over the place it's very difficult.

I also share my recent diet and how it's been helping out my own energy levels in training.

My first BJJ class is tomorrow! I’m looking through all your white belt tips 😁 joining the army so this seemed like a great sport to do until shipment!

Another big thing for me was sleep. I used to get horrible sleep but I always felt lazy for not going to jiu jitsu in the morning and after a while I got tired of feeling like that and went to a sleep doctor and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. Have a CPAP machine now and I feel like I have unlimited stamina.

The week of my competition this weekend, I trained 8 times in five days. I rolled every round. I think diet is super important, especially if you're inexperienced like me (I only have three months of jiu jitsu). I ate super clean and ended up winning all my fights by submission in less than a minute! It felt great too. I wasn't tired at all nor did I have any burnout.

Changing up my diet and lifting for endurance helped me significantly with energy in general. Adding more protein with carbs in the morning was the first step. Sometimes I switch it up to keep it interesting, but if I stick to my key nutrition plan I feel like I roll and lift better.

Man I feel this big time. There are days where I have gone to three classes in a single day and feel tired but can compete by the end. There are also days where I miss two days and rest and show up and feel like it's my first day at BJJ and I'm almost puking.

Starting bjj tomorrow night, i'm not sure i could go that far as to sticking to a strict diet, but for the last year I've been making an effort to eat healthier. Started by slowly cutting sugar out of my coffee, then giving up one of my favorite vices, candy, I keep slowly marching on to a healthier life style. With every change I've made, I feel MUCH better. Can't wait to see where this path is gonna take me!

Sleep and nutrition, and hydratation are key.

I have learned, a bowl of oatmeal about 1.5-2 hours before a hard class is a great way to make sure I have enough in the gas tank.

I'd say if diet doesn't do the trick, maybe have a look at your sleep. Small changes in my sleep quality have huge impacts the next day. Lots of smart watches and rings these days will tell you more details about your sleep cycles and if you're getting quality sleep or not.
