Thebes

Although it is a family tragedy, the story of Oedipus and his sons is closely tied to the history of Thebes, a city in Boeotia. Many of its inhabitants descended from an army created by a fantastic event in the life of the hero Cadmus, the founder of Thebes. Cadmus killed the dragon that lived on the Theban plain and buried its teeth. From those teeth grew an army, whose members became the ancestors of the Thebans. Much later, when Polynices was exiled by his brother Eteocles, he fled to Argos and sought help from King Adrastus. Together with five other rebels, they started the war known as the “Seven Against Thebes,” but their army was defeated, both brothers were killed, and the noble line started by Cadmus was broken. Among the few ancient ruins are remnants of the city walls, the palace of Cadmus, and the temple of Apollo.
