That moment at 2:08 is the most powerful part of the film. When Gaston begs for his life and claims he will do anything, it reminds the Beast of his own pleading to the Enchantress when he was still human. In that moment, he realises that Gaston is who he would have become if he’d never been turned into a Beast. The fact he feels empathy for his enemy and allows him to leave proves he has grown into a mature man instead of the selfish boy he once was.

If we delve into the symbolism:
-Beast and Gaston are wearing clothes of the opposite colours, showing them as reflections of one another.
-Beast fighting against the wolves is also a foreshadowing to this: the wolves are relentless, ruthless and they never stop until they are dead....this description is also applied to Gaston as well, bonus points for Gaston having icy blue eyes, which are commonly associated with wolves.
-Gaston is the embodiment of the Beast's past self: spoiled, selfish, vain and unkind, with no love in his heart for anyone but also representing the sort of person the Beast could have become had the Enchantress never cursed him.

The closeup of the Beast’s rough claw gently taking Belle’s human hand is one of the greatest and most underrated images in Disney history.

I love how people think Gaston is a misunderstood person when he literally shoots a clearly distressed creature and even mocks him with a sadistic glee for being kind and gentle.

Probably the cruelest thing about Gaston is that despite sharing what he thought about the Beast in the song “Kill Beast” and that he described the Beast as a bloodthirsty savage, he was obviously aware of the Beast’s intelligence and knew that he wasn’t just some dumb animal as he made everyone else to believe. He talks to Beast throughout the fight showing that he clearly knows he can understand him. This might be giving him too much credit, but It’s possible that Gaston might’ve even realized that the Beast was a human being who had been cursed. But Gaston didn’t care about any of this, he just knew that Bell had feelings for him and he wanted to get rid of him.

Fun Fact: Gaston was originally going to survive his fall off the castle after his battle with Beast with only a broken leg and then the wolves from earlier in the film would’ve viciously surrounded him and leaped upon him to devour him alive, but this was cut from the movie because the creators felt it would’ve been too gruesome for children. 


However, this idea was later used for another movie, specifically the Lion King where Scar survived his fall off the top of Pride Rock after his battle with Simba and then had the hyenas viciously surround him and leap upon him to devour him alive.

When both men were about to fall, the kindhearted Beast was rescued by Belle, while the sadistic Gaston had no one to save him from falling to his death.

I will never not be impressed with the Beast's shifting facial animations and how the folks at Disney were able to make a character who is clearly non human...

And at the same time, unbelievably human.

I've loved Beauty and the Beast since I was very young, still my favourite Disney film. The moment where Beast's face softens as he holds Gaston over the edge is still so powerful every time I watch it. "Learning to love" didn't just mean falling for Belle, it also meant becoming a better person and treating others with compassion. Even though it's easily within his power to kill Gaston, he shows him mercy. It's that moment Beast realises that Gaston is only a bully and a coward, and that inside he isn't the monster they all take him to be.

The Beast is too sad and depressed to fight back at first. Then he sees Belle and finally gets angry and fights back. Gaston should've realized how badly he messed up, but no. He still tries to kill the Beast.
