Porsche 911 Dakar - A complicated relationship with safari 911s

The trend of safari style Porsche 911s continues to grow, and now Porsche is releasing the 911 Dakar which is a straight-from-the-factory rally 911. But I have a lot of mixed emotions about safari 911s. In this video I'll discuss the pros and the cons from the point of view of someone who owns a "regular" 911 and had done some rally driving at the Dirtfish school. I currently have a Macan Turbo PP, I'm searching for a 957 Turbo for towing, and I also own a GT3 and a T. I absolutely love the Dakar and have placed a deposit hoping to get an allocation. If acquired, I don't know that it will see off road for the reasons you outlined, but I do live in a small town with roads that are characterized by cobblestone, endless speed bumps, countless potholes, steep hills and steep transitions, all of which make it a chore to drive a 911 here. Though I believe an off road 911 would've better served the market had it been built as a C4 and priced perhaps at a small premium for the upgraded suspension and other bits, I'm still happy to pay to be able to daily a 911 here and hope I can get my hands on one.

That said, other than novelty and weight, I don't know what the Dakar offers that can't be matched or exceeded by a Cayenne or Macan for off road use. In fact, Nobody really needs one. It is purely a novelty toy.

There are SO many models of 911 available, what's wrong with a limited version for a niche market? It's like how most 4x4s never see a dirt track... there's something for everyone, even if the car is never used for it's intended point of focus. I know someone with a GT2 who has never taken is car on a race track or even done over 100mph, lol. If the Safari was going to be the only 911 available to buy, I'd agree with you, but it's just a low volume production flight of fancy.
