In a nutshell, The Thing is a Kübelwagen for civilians to buy. Also, the Kübelwagen is associated with the Wehrmacht in WWII as it served in the German Army during the war.

I really hope that Forza devs keep adding these weird and quirky cars to Forza Horizon 5 because they are one of the best cars ever. And this *Thing* is sick. Unfortunately you can't remove the roof in FH5 but that's fine because I love this car and it has some cool customization. I just hope that the next update brings some cool cars and not some electric appliances.

The Type 82 "Kübelwagen" was made from 1940-1945 and was mostly built for the German Army (some were sent to Great Britain's army in 1945).
The Type 181 "Kurierwagen" (aka Thing) started production in 1968 and was a modified Kübelwagen made for both Military and Civilian use.

There was also the Auto-Union DKW Munga from 1956-1968 that did the same roles as the VW Type 181, but that would be more of an Audi than a VW.
